BAGHDAD: Iraqi forces have shot dead a prominent Sunni Muslim cleric accused of “terrorism” after a botched execution sparked widespread protests that left at least five people dead and 100 injured.

Tens of thousands of protesters took to the streets to denounce the execution of top cleric Muqtada al-Sadr on Saturday, and many fear a return to the fierce sectarian violence that gripped Iraq between 2006 and 2008.
“It's a coup,” said one protester, who was injured in clashes with security forces. “The army is ruling the streets.”
The Shi'ite-led government has yet to comment on the execution of Muqtada al-Sadr, a one-time architect of the 2007 national elections who is now considered the highest ranking Sunni Muslim authority in the country.
The Friday Night Execution
On Friday, al-Sadr was transferred to a prison in the southern city of Nasiriyah after being captured earlier in the day in the southern town of Amara.
Al-Sadr was transferred in a convoy of government vehicles.
A leader of al-Sadr's Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq (AAH) militia group said in a statement on Saturday that al-Sadr's body was moved during the transfer, and two knives and a pistol were removed from his body.
The leader of the AAH, Sheikh Qais al-Khazali, said the weapons were taken from al-Sadr, who was handcuffed.
The official APS news agency reported that al-Sadr had been executed by hanging. Al-Sadr's son and the cleric's close aide, Ammar al-Sadr, also confirmed the execution.
Al-Sadr's current whereabouts are unknown, but his body was reportedly brought back to Amara.
Protests erupted in different parts of the city, and security forces fired tear gas and live rounds to disperse the crowds.
